Mad families constructed from perfect almost disjoint families

We prove the consistency of b > א1 together with the existence of a Π11definable mad family, answering a question posed by Friedman and Zdomskyy in [7, Question 16]. For the proof we construct a mad family in L which is an א1-union of perfect a.d. sets, such that this union remains mad in the iterated Hechler extension. The construction also leads us to isolate a new cardinal invariant, the Bor...

Rado's Selection Lemma Does not Imply the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem

In this paper we consider the following combinatorial theorem of R. RADO [8] henceforth refered to as RL: Let .5 be a family of finite sets and suppose that to every finite subset F of 3 there wrresponds a choice function plF whose domain is F such that plF(T) E T for each T E F . (I.e., there exists a function pl whose domain is the set of finite subsets of 3 such that for each finite F E 8, p...

Invariance properties of almost disjoint families

We answer a question of Gracia-Ferreira and Hrušák by constructing consistently a MAD family maximal in the Katětov order. We also answer several questions of Garcia-Ferreira.

A Special Class of Almost Disjoint Families

The collection of branches (maximal linearly ordered sets of nodes) of the tree ω (ordered by inclusion) forms an almost disjoint family (of sets of nodes). This family is not maximal – for example, any level of the tree is almost disjoint from all of the branches. How many sets must be added to the family of branches to make it maximal? This question leads to a series of definitions and result...

Almost disjoint families of connected sets

We investigate the question which (separable metrizable) spaces have a ‘large’ almost disjoint family of connected (and locally connected) sets. Every compact space of dimension at least 2 as well as all compact spaces containing an ‘uncountable star’ have such a family. Our results show that the situation for 1-dimensional compacta is unclear.  2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
